Possible natural gas leak closes Alberta highway near Easter Seal camp

COCHRANE, Alta. – A possible natural gas leak has closed a highway and may force the evacuation of a children’s camp in the Alberta foothills.

RCMP Sgt. Patricia Neely says fire crews have been called out to investigate a strong gas smell along Highway 66, just south of the Trans-Canada Highway near Cochrane.

The smell is near Camp Horizon, a children’s camp operated by the Easter Seal campaign.

Neely says officials want to keep Highway 66 clear in case the camp needs to be evacuated.

She adds that someone reported hearing a small explosion in the area Thursday night.
