Tentative contract ends nearly month-long strike by civic workers in Sechelt

SECHELT, B.C. – A nearly month-long civic strike has ended in the Sunshine Coast community of Sechelt, B.C.

The BC Government and Service Employees Union is recommending its 45 members accept a pact reached Friday, although a date for a ratification vote has not been set.

A strike began June 14 when civic employees and the District of Sechelt could not agree on several issues involving wages and benefits.

Highlights of the three-year contract include a lump-sum payment within two weeks of signing, total wage increases of 3.25 per cent over the final two years, and continuation of a scheduling system that allows employees to work longer hours in exchange for a four-day weekend every other week.

Mayor John Henderson says the strike has not destroyed friendships and he’s looking forward to putting the job action aside and getting on with business.

The BCGEU also represents civic workers in the Town of Gibsons, and negotiations there are ongoing. (CKAY)
