Authorities: 8 arrests after Michigan oil pipeline protest; others block work at site
STOCKBRIDGE, Mich. – Authorities say they’ve arrested eight people protesting a Michigan oil pipeline project and others have attached themselves to construction equipment at the site.
The Lansing State Journal reports (http://on.lsj.com/17ythUY ) the arrests Monday morning came during a Michigan Coalition Against Tar Sands protest in the Stockbridge area. The Ingham County sheriff’s department says four other people had attached themselves to equipment.
Sheriff’s Lt. Vern Elliott says the four people will be removed and arrested for trespassing. The site is about 55 miles west of Detroit.
Protesters seek to halt Enbridge Inc.’s building of a new line. The Calgary, Alberta-based company’s pipeline ruptured in southwestern Michigan in 2010, spilling about 800,000 gallons of oil into a river. The line runs from Sarnia, Ontario, to Griffith, Ind.
