Taxman’s pilot project targets cheaters in British Columbia’s resource industry
OTTAWA – The big resource boom in western Canada is becoming a big headache for the taxman.
The Canada Revenue Agency has found that some small-time operators who service the resource industry are not filing their taxes.
The agency carried out a pilot project, focusing largely on the Peace River area of northeastern British Columbia.
The two-year probe into hundreds of couriers, paramedics and drivers uncovered some $2 million in unpaid taxes.
The Canadian Press obtained a report on the pilot project under the Access to Information Act.
The agency says the lessons from the project will be applied to other areas undergoing a resource boom.
