Unseeded Sorana Cirstea knocks off Li Na for spot in Rogers Cup final

TORONTO – Sorana Cirstea has denied China’s Li Na a return trip to the Rogers Cup final.

The unseeded Romanian upset the fourth-seeded Li with a 6-1, 7-6 (5) victory on Saturday afternoon.

Li lost last year’s final to Petra Kvitova, who Cirstea eliminated in Friday’s quarter-finals.

The world No. 27-ranked Cirstea has been the Cinderella story this tournament. She ousted two former world No. 1s in Jelena Jankovic and Caroline Wozniacki before dethroning the sixth-seeded Kvitova.

Cirstea is hunting for her second WTA title since 2008 in Tashkent. She’ll take on the winner of the evening semifinal between top-seed American Serena Williams and third-seed Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland.

In doubles play, Anna-Lena Groenefeld of Germany and Czech Kveta Peschke advanced to the final with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Russian duo Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina.

Canadians Gabriela Dabrowski and Sharon Fichman will meet Jankovic and Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia in the other semifinal.
