U.S. man convicted of smuggling drugs and guns across B.C.-Washington border
CRESTON, B.C. – An American man has been convicted and sentenced to one year in jail after attempting to smuggle a handgun and drugs across the border into British Columbia.
The Canada Border Services Agency says Marcos Cruz Herrera of Othello, Wash., was attempting to cross the Kingsgate border from Washington into southeastern B.C.
A news release says he was flagged for a secondary inspection, during which officers found a semi-automatic handgun, 138 grams of methamphetamine and a digital scale hidden in the vehicle’s trunk, behind the lining.
Herrera was arrested for smuggling under the Customs Act and held in custody.
He pleaded guilty to making false statements, unauthorized possession of firearms and possession of a controlled substance, and a judge sentenced him to one year jail, as well as a mandatory 10-year firearm ban.
The sentencing was on July 31, though the Canada Border Services Agency are only now providing details about the case.
