Teen Kiwi golf sensation Lydia Ko comes out blazing at Canadian Women’s Open
EDMONTON – Teen golfing sensation Lydia Ko is serving notice she doesn’t plan to give up her Canadian Open crown without a fight.
The 16-year-old New Zealander fired 5-under 65 in the first round at Edmonton’s Royal Mayfair Club. She was tied for the clubhouse lead with American Angela Stanford.
Ko stunned the golf world last year when she won the Canadian Open event in Vancouver at age 15.
Ko came out firing today, birdying four of the first seven holes.
She had six birdies to go with one bogey.
Ko is still playing as an amateur and, if she wins Sunday, won’t be allowed to accept the $300,000 first prize.
