Canadian mining company executive kidnapped by Colombian rebels has been freed
TORONTO – A Canadian mining company executive who was kidnapped by Colombian rebels in January has been freed.
The International Committee of the Red Cross says Gernot Wober was released today by National Liberation Army rebels and is currently being transported to the city of Barrancabermeja, north of Bogota.
The leftist rebels handed Wober over to a team of Red Cross representatives and church officials.
Wober, vice-president of exploration of the Toronto-based Braeval Mining, was abducted on Jan. 18, along with two Colombian employees and two Peruvian consultants.
Braeval is focused on the exploration and development of gold projects in the Americas.
The ICRC says Wober has been checked up by a doctor and is in good health.
“We are happy he can soon meet his family again,” said Jordi Raich, head of the ICRC in Colombia.
