Yamamoto loses no-hit bid in 9th, Dodgers beats White Sox 7-1

CHICAGO (AP) — Yoshinobu Yamamoto carried a no-hit bid into the ninth inning, sending the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 7-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Saturday.

Yamamoto retired his first 23 batters before Chase Meidroth reached on a two-out error on shortstop Mookie Betts in the eighth. Jacob Gonzalez then bounced to second, ending the inning.

But Tristan Peters hit a leadoff drive for the White Sox in the ninth. Peters drove a 96.6 mph fastball deep to right for his third homer.

After Edgar Quero flied out to center, Yamamoto (7-4) was replaced by Alex Vesia. The Japanese right-hander received a standing ovation from the sellout crowd of 37,832 as he departed the mound.

The 27-year-old Yamamoto struck out seven in his fourth consecutive victory. He threw 109 pitches, 74 for strikes.

Max Muncy homered twice and drove in four runs for the Dodgers, who bounced back nicely after losing 8-2 in the series opener Friday night. Shohei Ohtani hit a leadoff homer in his return to the lineup after missing a game because of inflammation in his left knee.

Chicago had won eight consecutive home games for the first time since August 2020. Sean Burke (3-4) was charged with four runs and six hits in four innings.

CARDINALS 9, TWINS 6

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Blaze Jordan hit his first major league homer and Iván Herrera went deep twice for St. Louis in a power-fueled victory over Minnesota.

Herrera and Jordan Walker had back-to-back home runs off reliever Justin Lawrence that broke a seventh-inning tie, and Jordan followed with a three-run shot against Travis Adams. Lawrence (0-3) surrendered four straight hits after striking out the first two batters.

Jordan, who made his MLB debut on Friday, tripled to start a two-run second and is 4 for 8 with four RBIs in two games. The 23-year-old was summoned from Triple-A to replace the demoted Nolan Gorman at third base.

Herrera got the Cardinals going with a two-run shot after Masyn Winn led off the game with a walk against Connor Prielipp, who recovered from a 4-0 deficit to complete six innings.

Byron Buxton and Royce Lewis homered for the Twins in the fourth and Luke Keaschall hit a two-run shot in the fifth against starter Matthew Liberatore to even the game.

But another bullpen failure by the Twins helped the Cardinals make up for their own late-inning relief struggles in a 9-8 loss in the series opener.

YANKEES 3, BLUE JAYS 1

TORONTO (AP) — Paul Goldschmidt hit a tiebreaking home run in the ninth inning and New York beat Toronto.

After Cody Bellinger singled to open the ninth against Blue Jays closer Louis Varland, Goldschmidt followed with a 400-foot drive to left, his ninth home run.

Varland (3-2) had allowed just two earned runs this season before Saturday and hadn’t given up a home run in 36 2/3 innings.

Fernando Cruz (4-1) got out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth and David Bednar struck out the side in the ninth for his 14th save in 16 chances as New York won for the fifth time in six games.

Yankees right-hander Cam Schlittler allowed one run and six hits in seven innings. He walked a season-high four and struck out seven.

Toronto’s Kevin Gausman allowed one hit and one run in seven innings. He walked two and struck out seven.

Jasson Domínguez hit a solo home run in his return to the Yankees’ lineup, the only hit off Gausman.

REDS 2, DIAMONDBACKS 1

CINCINNATI (AP) — Noelvi Marte hit a go-ahead homer in the eighth inning, Rhett Lowder allowed one run in 5 2/3 innings and the Cincinnati Reds edged the Arizona Diamondbacks 2-1 on Saturday.

Lowder missed nearly a month with a shoulder injury that kept him out until early June and he wasn’t effective in his return from the injured list last week. But on Saturday, Lowder delivered one of his best starts of the season, giving up five hits while striking out six and walking two.

He initially faced some trouble when he gave up a solo homer to Corbin Carroll in the first inning. But Lowder cruised through the rest of his start before being relieved by Caleb Ferguson with two outs in the sixth. Tony Santillan got three outs for his third save.

Matt McLain doubled in the third and scored on Edwin Arroyo’s single to tie it at 1. The Reds had been hitting .133 with runners in scoring position in June.

With the win, the Reds ended a stretch of games during which they had lost seven of eight and 11 of 14.

BRAVES 3, METS 1

NEW YORK (AP) — Eli White homered and matched a career high with three hits, leading Atlanta to a win over New York.

White laced an RBI double in the second inning and homered in the fourth before hitting another double in the seventh as the major league-leading Braves halted their second three-game losing streak of the season.

The three-hit game was the fifth of White’s career and first since May 17, 2025.

Michael Harris II hit a 392-foot homer off the advertising signage along the second deck in right field in the eighth.

Martín Pérez (4-2) allowed one run and struck out four in 5 1/3 innings to win his third straight start — his longest streak since he won three consecutive starts for the Texas Rangers from June 21 through July 2 in 2022.

Raisel Iglesias closed out his 14th save by getting Francisco Alvarez, the potential winning run, to hit into a game-ending 1-4-3 double play. Juan Soto’s apparent homer leading off the ninth was overturned due to fan interference, sending Soto to second with a double.

Bo Bichette remained hot for the Mets by going 2 for 3 and scoring on Mark Vientos’ sixth-inning single. Bichette is batting .389 (14 for 36) over the last nine games dating to June 3, a span in which he’s raised his batting average from .213 to .236.

PADRES 9, ORIOLES 3

BALTIMORE (AP) — Jackson Merrill and Samad Taylor each hit a two-run homer in the first inning, and three more San Diego batters went deep as it rolled to a victory over Baltimore.

Taylor’s home run was the first of his career, and it gave the Padres a 4-0 lead. Pete Alonso went deep in the bottom of the first for Baltimore, but Randy Vásquez (6-4) held the Orioles to two runs in five innings, and the Padres added two runs in the fifth to take a 6-2 lead. Then Gavin Sheets, Rodolfo Durán and Manny Machado added solo shots in the seventh, eighth and ninth for San Diego.

Orioles starter Trey Gibson (1-2) allowed only three hits in 4 1/3 innings, but he walked five with seven strikeouts. He was pulled after one of his pitches hit Xander Bogaerts in the helmet in the fifth. Bogaerts left the game the following inning.

Eight of Baltimore’s 10 hits came with two out. The Orioles were 6 for 6 with two walks and a hit batter in two-out, bases-empty situations. That made them the first team since at least 1974 to bat 1.000 with two outs and nobody on while having at least eight such plate appearances in a game.

The final of those situations came in the ninth. With two outs, nobody on and a six-run lead, Padres reliever Ron Marinaccio hit Gunnar Henderson with the first pitch. Marinaccio was ejected, and manager Craig Stammen came out to argue and was tossed too.

PIRATES 3, MARLINS 2

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Spencer Horwitz was hit by a pitch from Anthony Bender with the bases loaded in the eighth inning to bring in the go-ahead run and give Pittsburgh a win over Miami, ending its six-game win streak.

Bender (1-1) struck out the first two batters of the inning before surrendering singles to Tyler Callihan and Jake Mangum and walking Jared Triolo. On the first pitch following a mound visit, Bender hit Horwitz with a 97 mph sinker to bring home Callihan.

The Marlins, who had won nine of 10 in June, got a leadoff single from Otto Lopez and a walk to Xavier Edwards in their half of the eighth, but Yohan Ramírez (4-2) struck out the next three batters.

Gregory Soto gave up a leadoff single to Esteury Ruiz in the ninth before retiring three straight for his 10th save.

NATIONALS 8, MARINERS 3

WASHINGTON (AP) — Luis García Jr. broke a fifth-inning tie with a two-run homer and Washington defeated Seattle.

CJ Abrams had three hits and two RBIs for Washington (36-35), which improved to 13-21 at Nationals Park after losing its previous four home games. Abrams also scored twice.

Colt Emerson homered for the second consecutive game for the AL West-leading Mariners, who are 4-5 on a 10-game trip to Detroit, Baltimore and Washington.

With the score tied at 3 in the fifth, James Wood hit a sharp single to third that was originally ruled an error. García then ripped Luis Castillo’s changeup 408 feet to right-center for his ninth homer this season.

Abrams helped expand the lead in the seventh with an RBI single before scoring when reliever Eduard Bazardo’s pickoff attempt trickled off runner Dylan Crews into foul territory. Washington made it 8-3 when Crews scored from first on José Tena’s single to center.

Nationals starter Cade Cavalli (4-4) allowed three runs and struck out five in five innings.

Washington scored three unearned runs in the first against Castillo (2-6). García reached on first baseman Josh Naylor’s error, then scored on Abrams’ two-out single. Daylen Lile followed with a triple to right before coming home on Crews’ single.

Castillo yielded five runs in 5 2/3 innings while striking out four.

GUARDIANS 3, TIGERS 1

CLEVELAND (AP) — Tarik Skubal was tagged for a two-run homer by Cleveland’s Daniel Schneemann in the two-time reigning Cy Young winner’s return from elbow surgery and the Guardians downed Detroit.

Skubal (3-3) threw 80 pitches in his first start since April 29. The left-hander had a loose body removed from his elbow during an innovative surgical procedure on May 6, allowing Skubal to come back earlier than expected.

The win came at a steep price for the Guardians as star third baseman José Ramírez suffered a broken bone in his left hand. Ramírez fractured his hamate bone on a swing in the fifth inning. He’ll be out for an indefinite period.

He gave up Schneemann’s shot in the third inning and four other hits before being pulled after 4 2/3 innings. Although he wasn’t as sharp as usual, Skubal’s presence alone was a huge lift for the Tigers, who have been decimated by injuries all season.

Joey Cantillo (5-3) allowed one run in five innings and the Guardians won despite losing Ramírez and outfielders Chase DeLauter and Angel Martinez to injuries in the first two innings.

RED SOX 6, RANGERS 3

BOSTON (AP) — Ceddanne Rafaela’s two-run single snapped a tie in the seventh inning as Boston beat Texas.

Rafaela’s two-out, two-strike hit off reliever Robby Ahlstrom with the bases loaded gave the Red Sox a 4-2 lead and helped them clinch their first series win at Fenway Park since April 6-8 when they took two of three games from Milwaukee. Boston won Friday’s series opener against Texas, 10-1.

The Rangers closed within one in the eighth when Jake Burger hit his 12th home run, but Boston added some insurance in the bottom half courtesy of Jarren Duran’s two-run homer. It was Duran’s 11th of the season.

Pitching for the first time since June 5, Red Sox closer Aroldis Chapman got three outs to earn his 14th save. Garrett Whitlock (4-1) worked a perfect seventh and was the second of five relievers used by Boston.

Texas leadoff batter Wyatt Langford finished with three hits and an RBI. Rangers right-hander Cole Winn (2-2) gave up two hits in the seventh and took the loss.

Mickey Gaspar and Wilyer Abreu each had an RBI single to help Boston build a 2-1 lead in the third.

Red Sox starter Ranger Suarez allowed two runs and six hits in five innings. The left-hander struck out seven and walking two.

Texas ace Jacob deGrom went six innings and left with the game tied at 2. The two-time NL Cy Young Award winner had five strikeouts and didn’t issue a walk.

PHILLIES 9, BREWERS 8

MILWAUKEE (AP) — J.T. Realmuto hit a three-run homer and Philadelphia scored five times in the sixth inning before holding on for a win over Milwaukee.

Bryson Stott put the Phillies ahead 4-3 in the sixth with his second RBI double of the game. Realmuto followed with his fourth home run this season, and Bryce Harper added a sacrifice fly later in the inning.

Edmundo Sosa homered in the second, and Realmuto had an RBI single in a two-run fourth as the Phillies opened a 3-0 lead. Sosa, Realmuto, Kyle Schwarber and Brandon Marsh each had three of Philadelphia’s 17 hits — one night after the Phillies were limited to one as Milwaukee ace Jacob Misiorowski struck out 15 batters on 95 overpowering pitches in his first career shutout.

Jackson Chourio homered twice and went 4 for 5 with four RBIs for the Brewers, who have lost three of four following a four-game winning streak. Garrett Mitchell had a two-run shot.

Milwaukee made it 8-5 in the seventh when Chourio hit a two-run drive to center field, his second homer of the night. It was Chourio’s second multihomer game this season and the fourth of his career.

Marsh added an RBI single in the eighth before the Brewers scored three runs in the bottom half. Mitchell scored on a wild pitch, Christian Yelich delivered a sacrifice fly and Chourio had an RBI single.

Jhoan Duran pitched a perfect ninth for his 18th save.

ASTROS 8, ROYALS 7

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jose Altuve hit a tying home run in the eighth inning, Joey Loperfido scored the go-ahead run when the Royals botched a potential inning-ending double play in the ninth, and Houston beat Kansas City.

The Astros hit four homers in a game delayed for 91 minutes in the eight due to tornado warnings. Houston has hit multiple homers in three straight games, 10 in all.

Christian Walker hit his 18th home run in the fourth — a two-run shot — and Brice Matthews hit his sixth in the fifth inning to tie the game at 4-all.

Jake Meyers’ sixth-inning solo shot gave the Astros their first lead, 5-4 before Altuve homered to tie it at 7-all moments before the weather delay.

Houston starter Mike Burrows allowed five runs — four earned — in five-plus innings, and has surrendered 10 home runs in his last six starts and 18 on the season, most in the American League.

Bryan King (1-1) struck out one in a hitless eighth and Bryan Abreu pitched the ninth for his fifth save.
