TAMPA BAY, Fla. – The Calgary Zoo says Spike the elephant has safely arrived at his new home at Busch Gardens in Florida.
The zoo says the pachyderm will be in quarantine for 30 days before being able to join the five female elephants that live there.
Earlier this week, Spike was packed into a large travelling container which was loaded onto a truck by a crane for the long journey from Calgary to Tampa Bay.
The crate was temperature-controlled and had a closed-circuit camera inside.
Spike was accompanied by a team of elephant experts, including a veterinarian.
The elephant had been on an extended loan from the Miami Zoo after it was damaged by Hurricane Andrew in 1992.
The Calgary Zoo’s three other elephants will be moved to a facility in Washington, D.C., next spring.
