Injured man carried off remote Vancouver Island mountain in two-night rescue
PORT ALBERNI, B.C. – Search teams on Vancouver Island have wrapped up a gruelling rescue of a hiker injured on Mt. Arrowsmith, near Port Alberni, B.C.
The man suffered broken bones when he fell during a hike on Saturday afternoon, but bad weather prevented him from being airlifted out of the rugged area.
Instead, ground crews stayed with him overnight and began carrying him off the mountain on Sunday.
As many as 90 search and rescue team members took part in the operation, helping stabilize the middle-aged hiker, who is believed to have a broken collar bone, ribs and a shattered ankle.
Rescuers reached a clearing at about 4:30 Monday morning where a Cormorant helicopter from 442 squadron was waiting to airlift the man to hospital in Nanaimo.
The man’s wife and dogs had been walked to safety on Saturday by some of the first crews called to the scene.
