‘You Light Up My Life’ composer’s son sentenced to 25 years to life in girlfriend’s death
NEW YORK, N.Y. – An Oscar-winning songwriter’s son has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison after being convicted of strangling his fashion designer girlfriend in a swank New York hotel room.
Nicholas Brooks was sentenced Monday. The 27-year-old was convicted in July of murdering 33-year-old Sylvie Cachay (Cash-AY’).
His father, Joseph Brooks, wrote the 1970s hit “You Light Up My Life.”
The younger Brooks was arrested in 2010, as his father faced charges of raping or molesting would-be actresses. The Oscar-winning songwriter killed himself in 2011, while awaiting trial.
Cachay’s body was found in an overflowing bathtub on Dec. 9, 2010.
The Manhattan district attorney’s office says Nicholas Brooks strangled her after she tried to end their six-month relationship.
Brooks’ attorney suggested Cachay drowned accidentally after mixing alcohol with prescription drugs.
