TORONTO – Ikea Canada has bought a 46-megawatt wind farm project under construction in Pincher Creek, Alta.
The furniture retailer acquired the 20-turbine operation from wind and solar power company Mainstream Renewable Power.
Financial terms of the deal were not immediately available.
Ikea has set a global goal to be energy independent by 2020, producing more renewable energy than it uses.
The wind farm in Alberta, which is expected to be fully operational next year, will produce enough power for 32 Ikea stores, or more than twice its power consumption in Canada.
Ikea has invested in wind farms in Sweden, Denmark, Germany, France, Poland, the United Kingdom and Ireland.
