Prime Minister’s Office wades gingerly into debate over Toronto Mayor Rob Ford
OTTAWA – The Prime Minister’s Office is weighing in for the first time on the controversy raging around Toronto Mayor Rob Ford.
Jason MacDonald, spokesman for Prime Minister Stephen Harper, describes the allegations against Ford as “troubling” and says the federal government does not condone illegal drug use.
MacDonald says that includes elected officials who are in currently in office, including Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau — who admitted over the summer he once smoked pot as a sitting MP.
MacDonald says the government will continue to work with all levels of government on “shared priorities,” such as jobs and economic growth.
He says that includes working with mayors and city councils, including Toronto.
Harper has not yet spoken publicly about the Ford controversy.
