Calgary woman found guilty of infanticide in deaths of her newborns
CALGARY – A Calgary woman accused in the deaths of two of her newborns who were thrown in the trash has been found not guilty of second-degree murder.
Meredith Borowiec (BOHR’-uh-wik), who is 32, has instead been convicted on the lesser charge of infanticide.
Judge Peter McIntyre said the Crown had proven that the infants were alive when they were disposed of in a garbage bin and he accepted that Borowiec was responsible for their deaths.
But he ruled she was not in her right mind as a result of childbirth so a murder conviction was not warranted.
Infanticide carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison.
A sentencing date is to be set Friday.
