University of British Columbia to announce future of varsity teams soon

VANCOUVER – The University of British Columbia is speeding up the process that will determine the fate of its varsity sports teams.

UBC is in the midst of a review of its athletics program and will announce by the end of 2013 or early in 2014 which teams it’s bumping down to club status. The school had previously hoped to make an announcement in the spring.

UBC currently has 29 varsity teams, but university president Stephen Toope says the school needs to focus its athletics budget to ensure its future strength.

News of the sport review has garnered strong opposition from some alumni, with many concerned that the football and hockey teams could be unfairly targeted.

Toope says the review does not have a pre-determined outcome, while adding that no money is being cut from the varsity sports budget.

Toope also announced that two alumni members are being added to the sport review advisory team.
