Cochrane’s two-medal performance at worlds earns him male swimmer of year award
VANCOUVER – Ryan Cochrane’s performance at the world aquatics championships has earned him the OMEGA Canadian male swimmer of the year award.
The 25-year-old from Vancouver won a silver medal in the 1,500-metre freestyle for his sixth world championship medal — the most all-time for a Canadian. He won bronze earlier in the meet in Barcelona in the 800 freestyle.
Cochrane is only the second male ever to win medals in both those events at three consecutive world championships, the first being Australian star Grant Hackett.
Benoit Huot and Valerie Grand’Maison were named the male and female Paralympic swimmers of the year earlier in the week.
The female swimmer and open water swimmers of the year, along with the people’s choice race of the year winner, are still to be announced.
