Broadway box offices gobble up Thanksgiving records thanks to ‘Kinky Boots,’ ‘The Lion King’

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Thanksgiving was rough on turkeys but pretty good for Broadway theatres — several shows broke records, including the new “Kinky Boots” and the old “The Lion King.”

The Tony Award-winning “Kinky Boots” grossed $1,912,568 over eight performances during the week ending Sunday, smashing the all-time house record at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre. The crown had been held by the revival of “How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,” which had one more performance in January 2012.

“The Lion King” shows no signs of losing its roar — the show netted $2,365,402, setting a house record for an eight- performance week at the Minskoff Theatre. The show, celebrating its 16th year, will pass “Les Miserables” next month to become the fourth longest-running show on Broadway.
