Jones leads women’s standings at Olympic curling trials with a win over Lawton

WINNIPEG – Jennifer Jones is alone in first place in the women’s standings at the Canadian Olympic curling trials after cruising to an 8-3 win over Stefanie Lawton in Draw 9.

Jones broke her game open in the seventh end, when she scored three points to take a 6-2 lead.

The Winnipeg skip improves to 4-1.

Val Sweeting entered the draw tied with Jones, but fell 7-6 to Sherry Middaugh, who scored three in the final end for the comeback victory.

Sweeting is now in a three-way tie for second with Rachel Homan and Chelsea Carey.

Homan defeated Heather Nedohin 5-3 in the morning draw, while Carey downed Renee Sonnenberg 6-4.

The men play in the afternoon draw, with Olympic champion Kevin Martin and Brier winner Brad Jacobs both sporting 4-0 records.
