Actor Steve Martin co-curating Lawren Harris exhibition that will hit the AGO

TORONTO – Famed actor-musician Steve Martin is co-curating an exhibition of major works by Group of Seven member Lawren Harris.

The Art Gallery of Ontario says the Golden Globe-nominated comic and renowned banjo player is developing an exhibition of Harris pieces from the 1920s and ’30s.

His aim is to introduce the late Brantford, Ont., native to an international audience.

Martin will open the show at the Hammer Museum at UCLA in fall 2015, tour it in the U.S. and then take it to the AGO in Toronto.

The recent honorary Oscar recipient is working on the exhibition with curators Cindy Burlingham of the Hammer and Andrew Hunter of the AGO.

The three will also write essays for a publication complementing the show.

The AGO says Martin, who has written books about art and likes to collect it, believes Harris is “an overlooked artist of great accomplishment and significance.”
