Quebec’s anti-corruption unit credits mayor for latest sweep
MONTREAL – Quebec’s anti-corruption unit is crediting a mayor in suburban Montreal for its latest arrests.
The squad, known as UPAC, says Chateauguay Mayor Nathalie Simon went to police herself.
Authorities arrested four people today amid accusations they tried to corrupt the mayor in exchange for personal favours.
They are facing charges that include fraud against the government, conspiracy, municipal corruption and breach of trust.
The investigation began last September and police quickly amassed a wealth of evidence.
But corruption chief Robert Lafreniere told a news conference today that Simon’s bravery was key to ending the corruption strategy that targeted her administration.
