DETROIT – The start time of the Ontario Hockey League outdoor doubleheader at Comerica Park was delayed for over an hour Sunday due to the bright sunshine impairing the players’ vision on the ice.
The first game between the Saginaw Spirit and Windsor Spitfires eventually began at 3:08 p.m. Eastern Time. The second game between the London Knights and the Plymouth Whalers was tentatively scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m., the OHL said in a statement on its website.
It’s the first time in OHL history that regular-season games will be played outdoors. The games are part of the Hockeytown Winter Festival in Detroit.
The showcase game is scheduled for New Year’s Day, when the Toronto Maple Leafs will take on the Detroit Red Wings in the NHL’s Winter Classic.
