NDP says Liberals too slow to cut auto insurance rates after reducing benefits

TORONTO – Ontario’s New Democrats say the Liberal government is moving too slowly to cut auto insurance rates by 15 per cent, and warn they’ll remember that broken commitment at budget time this year.

The province’s insurance regulator approved rate decreases averaging 3.9 per cent for motorists, which the Liberals say means they are on track for a 15 per cent reduction over two years.

But NDP consumer critic Jagmeet Singh says most decreases won’t take effect for months, after many drivers renew their policies for another year.

The Liberals will need NDP support if their budget is to pass this year and avoid a spring election, and Singh says the government is not keeping its word.

He says the NDP will take that into consideration when it comes time to vote on the 2014 budget from the minority government.

However, Singh says the New Democrats’ priority is getting results for people, not about whether the province should have a general election this year.
