Trudeau wary of proposal to legalize, regulate, tax prostitution

OTTAWA – Justin Trudeau isn’t endorsing a proposal to legalize, regulate and tax prostitution just like any other commercial enterprise.

The Liberal leader says the proposal is one of many resolutions to be debated at the party’s national policy convention in Montreal next month.

He says he looks forward to the debate and hearing what rank and file Liberals have to say on the subject.

But he also appears to be signalling his own views against legalization, arguing that prostitution is a form of violence against women.

The debate is timely, coming as the Conservative government grapples with a Supreme Court of Canada ruling last month that struck down the country’s prostitution laws.

The Conservatives have pounced on the Liberal resolution to accuse Trudeau of wanting to legalize both marijuana and the sex trade.
