Talks underway to avert support workers strike in Victoria schools by Monday

VICTORIA – Negotiations are underway in an attempt to avert a strike Monday at the Greater Victoria School District.

School support staff who are members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 947 served 72-hour strike notice Wednesday, giving its 800 members the right to walk off the job Monday morning.

Fifty-one schools across Victoria would be behind pickets lines if a settlement is not reached, and teachers and unionized school trades people have said they will not cross the line.

Almost 20,000 students attend schools in Greater Victoria.

Local 947 is the only CUPE local in B.C. to reject a framework deal that provides a 3.5 per cent pay increase over two years.

Greater Victoria School District superintendent John Gaiptman (GAPE’-man) sent a letter to parents this week asking them not to send their children to school on Monday if there is a strike.
