Blue Jays activate righty Bieber from IL, confirm he will start against Astros

TORONTO — The Toronto Blue Jays activated right-handed pitcher Shane Bieber from the injured list and confirmed he will start in Tuesday afternoon’s game against the visiting Houston Astros.

The 2020 American League Cy Young Award winner, hasn’t pitched this season.

He was placed on the 15-day injured list in March with elbow inflammation and later transferred to the 60-day IL.

The 31-year-old Bieber rejoined the team on Friday after allowing five runs and 11 baserunners in five-plus innings in a rehab start for Triple-A Buffalo on Wednesday.

In a pair of corresponding moves, the Blue Jays optioned right-hander Lazaro Estrada to Buffalo and designated righty Hayden Juenge for assignment.

The Blue Jays entered Tuesday’s game with a 39-39 record after wining 4-2 in Monday night’s opener against Houston.
