iN NUMBERS: Looking at Okanagan condo inventory in wake of PM’s controversial buyout plan
Premier David Eby said the plan announced by Prime Minister Mark Carney to buy vacant condos and put them into a rent-to-own system could work in the Okanagan, Fraser Valley and Vancouver Island.
The details of the plan are pretty fuzzy, and it has already stirred up controversy, especially from opposition parties.
What is clear looking at the numbers is Kelowna has a stock of hundreds of empty condos, and the surrounding cities only dozens up for grabs.
Here are the numbers from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation and the Association of Interior Realtors:
- 1.5: Billion dollars. That’s the amount of money the federal and provincial government plan to spend to buy vacant condos and make them more affordable.
- 7,502: That’s how many condos are unsold in all of B.C. as of May.
- 2,200: That’s how many condos the government plans to buy in B.C.
- 760: That’s how many condos are completed but unsold or unoccupied in Kelowna as of May.
- 57: That’s how many condos are completed but unsold or unoccupied in West Kelowna as of May.
- 99: That’s how many condos are completed but unsold or unoccupied in Lake Country as of May.
- 25: That’s how many condos are completed but unsold or unoccupied in Kamloops as of May.
- 30: That’s how many condos are completed but unsold or unoccupied in Vernon as of May.
- 498,200: That’s the benchmark price for condos in the Central Okanagan in May, according to the Association of Interior Realtors.
- 322,100: That’s the benchmark price for condos in North Okanagan in May.

I do not agree with the gov’t buying up unsold condos. As a small business person, has the gov’t ever bailed me out?? NO! Business is business, take the loss or break even and go on to the next project.. Let people buy them at cost and move on! We would be helping those who cannot get into the housing market at inflated prices. give a low interest mortgage as we do with low interest student loans.
I think there are better ways for the gov’t to spend OUR MONEY>>
