Free Penticton pop-up pet vaccine clinic helps 31 dogs

The BC SPCA set up a pop-up clinic to get dogs vaccines for free in Penticton.

The pop-up vaccine clinic was at Penticton Veterinary Hospital on June 26 for vulnerable puppies and dogs because of concerns about parvovirus in the community, according to a press release from the BC SCPA.

“We knew we had to move quickly because parvo transmission between unvaccinated animals can happen very fast,” lead veterinarian at the hospital Dr. Michael Tigchelaar said in the release.

The clinic inoculated 31 dogs, including 29 for parvovirus.

The BC SPCA’s senior community services manager Jamey Blair said it was great to see pet owners get some peace of mind.

“In these moments, where you can really see and feel the impact of the BC SPCA’s work to support vulnerable animals, get me really excited for the next phases of our strategic work to address the root causes of and prevent animal suffering,” Blair said in the release.

This is the third clinic of its kind set up by the BC SPCA so far this year with the first two popping up in Prince George and Vancouver.

“So many community members are already dealing with the increasing costs of living and other challenges accessing veterinary services, we wanted to remove as many barriers to this potentially life-saving vaccine as possible,” Tigchelaar said.

One anonymous pet owner was thankful the BC SPCA could help their dog Rosie.

“Rosie is my best friend; she’s been through a lot with me. I am so thankful to have her and to the BC SPCA. I would be devastated if she were to become sick,” they said in the release.
