iN NUMBERS: TVs and tattoos show how excited B.C. was to host the World Cup

We’re in the final stretch of the FIFA World Cup and Vancouver is done playing its part as a host city.

Canada’s team had the best performance in the tournament’s history which could explain why everyone you know is suddenly a soccer fan.

Canada is kicking around the idea of hosting again in 2038, and a lot of folks are on board.

Here are some numbers to show how what British Columbians thought about the World Cup:

  • 33: Per cent. That was the increase in sales for TVs over 70 inches in the Vancouver area during the World Cup. Watching the match is a great excuse to finally get that upgrade.
  • 30: Per cent. That was the increase in walk-in customers at a tattoo shop in Vancouver during the tournament. People want some patriotic, soccer-themed ink.
  • 1: Billion dollars. That’s the estimate for how much out-of-province visitors spent in B.C. during the World Cup.
  • 42: Per cent of British Columbians surveyed said they are more interested in Canada’s national soccer team now than before the World Cup.
  • 37: Per cent of British Columbians surveyed would like for Vancouver and Toronto to be host cities for FIFA in 2038.
  • 29: Per cent of British Columbians surveyed would gladly see Canada host in 2038, but would like to add more cities to host matches.
  • 18: Per cent of British Columbians surveyed don’t want Canada to bid to host the 2038 World Cup.
  • 11.7: Million people watched the Canada vs. Qatar match at BC Place.
  • 52,497: Attendees came to each of the first five matches at BC Place.
  • 500: Free match tickets were given to kids and youth in B.C. through the Mini Peaks Legacy Program.
  • 5: Matches. That’s how many games Canada played in the tournament this time around, a historic run.
