iN NUMBERS: When it seems all the good BC campsites are booked

It’s well known that in order to book a popular, public campsite in B.C. for a long weekend in the summer, you need to show some dedication. When online reservations go live you need to be at your computer like a Taylor Swift fan trying to get a concert ticket.

But if you missed your window, hope is not lost, don’t forget there’s always interesting private sites, forest recreation sites and Crown Land.

Here are some numbers:

  • 7: Campgrounds are listed as available for reservations in the Southern Interior for this weekend.
  • 121: Private campgrounds in the Okanagan are listed on Hipcamp for this weekend, the app that’s like Airbnb for people who rent campsites on their property.
  • 6: Dollars. That’s the cheapest site on Hipcamp in the Okanagan.
  • 3: Months. That’s how far out you can book a campsite in B.C.
  • 1,494: Recreation sites are in B.C.
  • 94: Per cent of B.C. is Crown Land.
  • 14: Days. That’s how long campers are allowed to stay on Crown Land.
  • 3,578,518: That’s how many camping visits there were in BC Parks last year.
  • 29: Million dollars. That was the total revenue for user fees at BC Parks last year.
