Unsightly yet tasty produce for free on Ugly Potato Day in Kelowna

People are collecting misfit, unsightly and yet still tasty produce to give away in Kelowna this weekend.

Ugly Potato Day is a worldwide event that helps distribute produce that doesn’t sell in stores.

“Every year, grocery stores reject perfectly good food just because it looks a little different. A wonky carrot. A blemished apple. A potato that’s too small or too big. It all gets tossed, even though nothing is wrong with it,” the website reads.

Last year, there were more than 2,500 people at the event and it distributed more than 60,000 lb. of produce.

The goal this year is to give away 200,000 lb. of food.

Central Okanagan Community Foodbank is helping organize the event as a supporting partner.

Kelowna’s produce is going to be distributed for free at Evangel Church at 3261 Gordon Dr., starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 1.

“This is a free event made possible by farmers, volunteers, and our community. Please be kind, be patient, and enjoy the day,” the website reads.

There’s also an Ugly Potato Day happening in Surrey on Aug. 8.
