Markham’s Chan wins NBO qualifier in Montreal

Duncan Chan of Markham, Ont., survived a National Bank Open qualifying battle on Saturday in Montreal, with a three-set victory over Hugo Gaston of France.

Chan dropped the first set of the best-of-three match 2-6, then bounced back with 7-5, 6-3 wins.

Keegan Rice of Regina wasn’t as successful, however, as Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece won 6-3, 6-4. And Australian Adam Walton beat American-born Canadian player Justin Boulais 7-5, 7-6 (4).

In Toronto, Avery Alexander of Sudbury, Ont., lost her Saturday qualifier in straight sets to Polina Kudermetova of Uzbekistan, while Canadian Anna Grubor lost to Maya Joint of Australia in three sets, dropping the final set 7-6 (7).

The NBO gets underway Sunday in Montreal and Toronto.
