iN NUMBERS: Construction of new homes in B.C. down significantly this year

A single-detached home with a nice garden has been a pipe-dream for many people for a long time, and the number of new homes registered with BC Houing may reflects that fact.

A home registered with BC Housing means it’s officially logged as a new construction project before it goes to the municipal building permit process.

Far fewer single-detached homes have been registered and completed this year than the five-year average, and even multi-unit building completions have seen a dip.

Here are the numbers from the latest BC Housing report:

• 4,146: That’s the five-year average for how many new single-detached homes were registered in B.C. at this point in the year.
• 2,517: That’s how many single-detached homes have been registered in B.C. this year so far.
• 6.2: Per cent. That’s the Central Okanagan’s share of single-detached home construction in B.C.
• 22,347: That’s the five-year average for how many homes in multi-unit buildings like duplexes and townhomes are registered in in B.C. at this point in the year.
• 19,994: That’s how many homes in multi-unit buildings have been registered in B.C. this year so far.
• 36.6: Per cent. That’s Metro Vancouver’s share of single-detached home construction in B.C.
• 230: New homes in multi-family buildings have been registered in Central Okanagan this year so far.
• 23: New homes in multi-unit buildings have been registered in Okanagan-Similkameen this year so far.
• 153: New homes in multi-unit buildings have been registered in Thompson-Nicola this year so far.
• 6: New homes in multi-unit buildings have been registered in the North Okanagan this year so far.
