Year’s of drought and remarkably dry conditions has led to a brutal wildfire season in the Thompson-Okanagan region, but there’s a bit of good news in the forecast, some rain.

There’s a 30 to 60 per cent chance of showers in Kamloops today, Aug. 20, and tomorrow.

The same weather system is expected to bring some rain to the Okanagan later in the week, but it’s hard to tell where the rain is going to fall.

“It’s not a synoptic system which means it’s pretty tricky to pinpoint exactly where those showers will land,” Environment Canada meteorologist Morgen Shull told iNFOnews.ca.

“There could be certain locations within the region which see a pretty heavy shower which obviously would be great.”

The chance of rain does bring a chance of thunderstorms, and those are equally tricky to predict.

Shull said it looks like wildfire smoke and poor air quality are likely going to stick around.

Kamloops, the Okanagan and most of the Southern Interior is under an orange air quality advisory for at least the next 24 to 48 hours.

People have been advised to stay indoors and avoid strenuous outdoor activities as much as possible.

IQAir.com is showing high levels of PM2.5 throughout the region, especially in areas close to major fires.

Shull said she’s expecting a shift in the wind direction later in the week which could help with smoky conditions.

“It is indicating that there could be some clear air coming for you guys especially in the Kamloops region,” she said.

Temperatures are expected to be relatively cool this week in the Okanagan.

The daily high tomorrow is 28 Celsius but it’s expected to cool off to around 24 C for the rest of the week in the Okanagan.

Kamloops will be a bit warmer with daily high temperatures around 27 C with some cloud cover.

“If it’s very heavy smoke, continue to be careful with those daytime activities and try to stay indoors and hopefully some of the smoke clears out for you guys at least for a few days,” Shull said.
