LeBlanc, Charette to meet with U.S. trade officials in Washington as tariffs paused

WASHINGTON — Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc and chief negotiator Janice Charette are scheduled to meet with United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in Washington at 11:15 a.m. ET.

This latest meeting comes about 12 hours after President Donald Trump announced a three-day pause on 50 per cent tariffs on a host of Canadian goods worth $28 billion.

Trump threatened to impose those tariffs over Canada’s dairy supply management system, retaliatory tariff free-auto quotes and provincial bans on American alcohol in most provinces.

A proclamation on the delay from The White House says Canada agreed to work toward resolving these trade irritants.

Prime Minister Mark Carney issued a statement late Tuesday saying “substantial progress” has been made and that more work remains.

The new tariff deadline without a deal is 12:01 a.m. ET Saturday.
