The final summer performance of Parks Alive 2026 wrapped up at Mission Creek Regional Park with a live performance from local Kelowna band Tonight’s Forecast, but strong winds forced organizers to cancel a planned outdoor movie screening.

A showing of Shrek 2 was scheduled to follow the band’s performance, but the evening took an unexpected turn when a large tree branch fell onto one of the tents set up at the event.

Nobody was hurt.

Park interpreter Rose Maunder was on scene and quickly helped move guests away from the tree while a safety perimeter was established around the area.

Once the area was secured, Tonight’s Forecast was able to resume its performance. However, the strong winds continued, and the sound of smaller branches creaking and falling kept guests and organizers alert.

After the band finished its set, organizers and park staff decided not to proceed with the movie screening because of the risk of additional branches falling.

The windy conditions also brought an earlier-than-expected end to the evening.

While some guests were disappointed to miss the movie, they appeared to understand the safety concerns and packed up their blankets, chairs and snacks before heading home.

Despite the shortened evening, the performance by Tonight’s Forecast marked the conclusion of another summer season of Parks Alive events in Kelowna.
