The investigation is underway into a major fire at Vernon church Monday evening.

Firefighters responded to the blaze at Vernon Alliance Church in the 2600 block of 43 Avenue at around 5:24 p.m., Aug. 31, according to a City of Vernon media release.

Fire crews from several fire halls in the region were called in to fight the fully involved structure fire.

The fire did significant damage to the church before crews broke it under control. No one was injured as a result of the fire.

Crews are on the scene today and the city said the public can expect to see smoke and steam throughout the day from the church as they put out hot spots.

“While the fire caused significant damage to the structure, the firewall performed as intended and helped limit the spread of the fire, reducing damage to the sanctuary,” the release said.

The cause of the fire hasn’t been determined as the investigation continues.
