NEW YORK — Canadians Leylah Fernandez and Denis Shapovalov moved on to the third round of the U.S. Open with wins Wednesday.

Fernandez moved on with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Thailand’s Mananchaya Sawangkaew.

Later, Shapovalov defeated France’s Luca Van Assche 6-0, 6-4, 7-6 (7).

Fernandez will next face third seed Jessica Pegula of the United States.

Shapovalov next faces eighth seed and Canadian Open champion Ben Shelton of the United States.

Men’s third seed Félix Auger-Aliassime of Montreal is scheduled to face Russia’s Karen Khachanov in a second-round match Thursday.

The 23-year-old Fernandez from Laval, Que., who entered the Grand Slam ranked No. 33 in the world, won six of her eight break-point chances and took match point with an ace.

The U.S. Open runner-up in 2021 has a 1-3 record against Pegula, including a hard-court loss earlier this year in the third round of the Miami Open.

Shapovalov was up 5-1 in the third set before letting Van Assche back into the match. Shapovalov won the last three points of the tiebreaker, including match point with a forehand winner. The Canadian converted on seven of his nine break-point chances.

Shelton has a 4-0 record against Shapovalov.
