Rays put shortstop Taylor Walls on 10-day injured list with a right hip flexor strain

ATLANTA (AP) — Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Taylor Walls was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right hip flexor strange on Tuesday.

The move with Walls is retroactive to Sept. 6.

Walls is hitting .218 with 33 RBIs in 117 games this season and leads the majors in sacrifice hits with 12.

Rays manager Kevin Cash is optimistic that Walls’ stay on the IL will be a short one for the six-year veteran.

Infielder Nick Madrigal has been added to the roster from Triple-A Durham.

Cash said Jorge Mateo will be the primary shortstop in Walls’ absence. Mateo saw action in 67 games with the Braves earlier this season before being released on Aug. 9. The Rays picked him up on Aug. 13, and he has played in 17 games with 10 starts in a utility role. He is 5 for 43 (.128) with the Rays.

The AL East-leading Rays open a three-game series against NL East-leading Atlanta on Tuesday.
