Matthew Brennan wins a fifth stage at the Vuelta with a Sevilla sprint victory
SEVILLA, Spanish Vuelta (AP) — Matthew Brennan added a fifth stage victory to his impressive tally at the Spanish Vuelta by winning another bunch sprint on Wednesday.
The 21-year-old British rider has been unstoppable in sprints and became the first rider to post five stage wins in his Grand Tour debut since Fons De Wolf did it at the 1979 Vuelta.
Brennan, who rides for the Visma-Lease a bike team, was the fastest in the finale and raised his right hand with five fingers out as he crossed ahead of Jordi Meeus and Magnus Cort.
Stage 17 took the peloton from Dos Hermanas to Sevilla on a 185-kilometer (115-mile) ride.
Overall leader Enric Mas retained his advantage of 2 minutes, 6 seconds ahead of Felix Gall. Primož Roglič is a further 4 seconds back in third.
Thursday’s stage is a 32.1-km (20-mile) time trial that could be key for Roglič. The Vuelta finishes Sunday in Granada.
