BUDAPEST — Canada’s Marco Arop will run in Sunday’s men’s 800-metre final at the world athletics ultimate championship.

The three-time world championship medallist (one gold, two bronze) and Olympic silver medallist from Edmonton completed the race in one minute 44.21 seconds to finish third in the second heat on Saturday.

In the women’s 100 semifinals, Audrey Leduc of Gatineau, Que., and Sade McCreath of Ajax, Ont., both fell short of making the final. Leduc placed seventh (11.26) in the first heat and McCreath finished eighth (11.39) in the second heat.

American Melissa Jefferson-Wooden went on to win the women’s final with a world-leading time of 10.62 seconds.

Unlike the Olympics and world championships, no medals are awarded at the ultimate championship. Instead, athletes are competing for a share of a US$10-million prize pool, with each event winner earning $150,000.

The three-day championship continues Sunday.
