Young leads Canada to double-OT win over Britain at wheelchair basketball worlds

OTTAWA — Arinn Young had a game-high 32 points and added 10 rebounds as the Canadian women’s team finished undefeated in the group stage of the IWBF Wheelchair Basketball World Championships with a 92-91 double-overtime win over Britain on Tuesday.

Young capped her scoring with a free throw to put Canada up 92-88 with seven seconds left in the second overtime in the battle for top spot in Group A. That point proved to be the difference as Britain’s Katie Morrow hit a three-pointer at the buzzer.

Kady Dandeneau contributed a triple-double for Canada (5-0) with 27 points, 16 rebounds and 12 assists.

Robyn Love scored a team-high 23 points for Britain (4-1).

Canada faces Japan in a quarterfinal Wednesday at Ottawa’s TD Arena.

“Honestly, I’m so proud of this group,” Young said. “We knew this was going to be a really tough game. We stuck to the game plan the whole time. We stuck to what the coaches were saying to us and most importantly, we stuck together, and I think that’s why we won that game.”

Elise Froese added 12 points and two rebounds, and Mercy Nyakundi contributed 10 points and seven rebounds off the bench.

Canada shot 45 per cent from the field and held a 55—37 rebounding advantage, including 15 offensive rebounds. Britain held a 49-48 lead after three quarters.

“This was a crazy game,” said Puisand Lai, who added three points and seven rebounds in the win. “We went in wanting to win, of course. There were so many ups and downs, and we stayed together through all of it.”

Earlier, Canada’s men lost 78-67 to Argentina in a placement game.
