B.C. watchdog investigating after youth injured jumping off school roof
CRANBROOK — British Columbia’s police watchdog is investigating after a youth was seriously injured while jumping from the roof of a school.
The Independent Investigations Office and the RCMP say in separate statements that it began Wednesday morning when police were called to a home in Cranbrook where a youth was alleged to have threatened people with a knife.
Police say the youth ran off and was found on the roof of a nearby school.
Officers say they evacuated the school “out of an abundance of caution,” then set up a containment and tried to communicate with the suspect.
Shortly after 10 a.m., police say the youth jumped from the roof and is now hospitalized with serious injuries.
The IIO says it is now looking into police actions or inactions in the case, while the RCMP say no further details will be released as the independent investigation takes place.
