Snow turning to rain today

THOMPSON-OKANAGAN — It's not ever yet, snow is still falling across the region and forecasters are calling for another bout of heavy snow on area highways.

Environment Canada continued a special weather statement this morning, this time warning a Pacific frontal system will be moving across the Southern Interior by the afternoon, which will result in 10-15 cm of snow before another system brings more snow to the eastern part of the region Thursday.

The Coquihalla Highway has received 16 cm of snow and 7 mm of rain in the last day. Another 10 cm is expected before the snow level rises to 1,400 m late this morning and then rain mixed will snow is expected to fall near the summit beginning this evening.

The Okanagan Connector saw 9 cm of snow and 1 mm of rain over the past 24 hours and will likely get 10-15 cm by tomorrow morning, though the snow level is expected to rise to 1,600 m by tomorrow.

On Highway 1 snow will end this afternoon between Eagle Pass and Rogers Pass, where only 4 cm of snow and 4 mm of rain has fallen since yesterday morning. A total of 10-15 cm is expected during the day and then another 5-10 cm of snow is expected overnight.

In town we should see smaller amounts of snow, which will turn to rain in many areas as temperatures reach well above 0 Celsius. In Kamloops snow will end late this morning after dropping 2-4 cm of the white stuff and then a mix of rain and snow will begin again late evening. A 40 per cent chance of showers is in place for Thursday and then temperatures are expected to be in the double digits heading into the weekend.

In Vernon, Kelowna and Penticton a mix of snow and rain will end late this morning and then a 30-40 per cent chance of showers will remain in place for the rest of the day and overnight and showers are expected tomorrow. Temperatures will hit 8-12 C over the next week.
