Hot, dry summer over, time for normal fall weather in Okanagan, Kamloops

There were two solid weeks there where the skies were clear of smoke and the weather was pleasant and tolerable in the Okanagan and Kamloops.

The region is settling into fall and after a year of weather that’s too hot and too dry, things are looking normal.

Daily high temperatures are around 15 Celsius to 19 C for the coming week with overnight lows between 5 C and 10 C with some storms and showers coming through.

“We’re running about average for this time of year, sometimes a little bit warmer if you get some sunny breaks in there. There are some weather systems that are moving through the next week,” Environment Canada meteorologist Terri Lang told iNFOnews.ca.

For most of 2026, especially over the summer, heat and drought were a major concern, so having some normal weather is a break.

Lang said most of the rain and lightning should be coming through today, Sept. 25. The Okanagan is expecting up to 25 millimetres overnight with a bit less in Kamloops, around 10 mm.

Wind speeds are supposed to be around 30 km/h with some gusts up to 60 km/h.

Lang said there’s some risk of flooding in areas that have been hit by significant wildfires because the soil becomes hydrophobic and the water runs off rather than soaking into the ground.

“Sometimes that can cause issues on the slopes, because what happens is when the soils get burned, they tend to resist rain,” she said. “That’s the risk with more of these thunderstorms.”

The stormy weather is expected to stick around most of the weekend with scattered showers, but things should clear up for a few days early next week before another round of wet weather.

“We always put that little reminder that when thunder roars, go indoors, especially if you’re on a golf course, or outside, or that type of thing. Wait till it passes, and give it some time, and then head back outside,” Lang said.
