Woman missing after being swept away in river near Keremeos

A search is now underway for a woman who drove off the roadway near Keremeos Friday morning and into a rushing river where she disappeared.

Keremeos RCMP was called June 4 just after 11 a.m., after a man witnessed a woman being swept away in the Similkameen River, RCMP said in a press release distributed by Cpl Jesse O'Donnaghey.

At around 10:45 a.m., 43-year-old Amy Sabean was driving a white Chevrolet Blazer, and was being followed by an associate who was in a separate vehicle.

"While travelling along Ashnola Road, at approximately the four to five kilometre marker towards Keremeos, the man witnessed Amy drive off the roadway and into the Similkameen River," RCMP said. "When she tried to get out of her vehicle she was swept away by the fast moving water."

Search and Rescue was immediately deployed, along with RCMP Air 4, as well as several members of Keremeos Highway Patrol who are assisting the Keremeos RCMP with the search. Border Agencies have been advised since the search area is close to USA border.

The search is ongoing and at this time no suspicious activity is suspected.
