AC Milan’s Alexis Saelemaekers faces several months out after ankle surgery

MILAN (AP) — AC Milan winger Alexis Saelemaekers underwent surgery on his ankle Tuesday and is expected to be sidelined for several months.

The Belgium international injured his right ankle in training at the end of last month — the same ankle that was operated on two years ago — and tests showed he had “lost stability at the site of the previous surgery.”

It was decided to operate again and Milan said “the arthroscopic debridement and stabilization procedure” Saelemaekers underwent in Amsterdam “was successfully completed.”

No official timeline for his return was given but Italian media reported the 27-year-old Saelemaekers is unlikely to be back before February.

Saelemaekers has been at Milan since January 2020, although he spent two seasons out on loan — at Bologna and Roma. He was an ever-present for the Rossoneri last season.
