UPDATE: Evacuation alert issued as wildfire northwest of Kamloops grows to 350 hectares

A wildfire northwest of Kamloops has prompted an evacuation alert for nine properties near Red Lake.

The Sparks Lake wildfire was discovered 15 kilometres north of Kamloops Lake yesterday, June 28, and has reached an estimated 350 hectares in size as of this morning.

There are 47 firefighters working the blaze today along with four helicopters and three pieces of heavy equipment, according to B.C. Wildfire Service. Eight air tankers were flying over the Sparks Lake wildfire on Monday and some may return today.

To the northeast of Kamloops, a small spot fire is burning near Harper Mountain on Tk'emlups te Secwepemc land. At 0.01 hectares, the Harper Mountain Trails fire is currently under control with three firefighters currently at the scene.

The Thompson Nicola Regional District issued an evacuation alert for Electoral Area J at 10:30 p.m., June 28, due to the Sparks Lake fire.
