Where to find late, lauded Kelowna artist Geert Maas’s work

Internationally acclaimed artist Geert Maas has died, but his legacy of sculptures will still be found throughout Kelowna and the Okanagan.

Originally from the Netherlands, Maas died this week at the age of 82 after spending nearly five decades in Kelowna.

His sculptures have become part of the fabric of Kelowna with multiple pieces scattered throughout the city and a gallery at the Maas home with 50 outdoor sculptures and many more inside.

His work has been shown in numerous exhibitions and is held in public, corporate and private collections worldwide, but he’s perhaps best known locally for his sculpture On the Beach at Waterfront Park, installed in 2002.

With work spanning several decades, he told iNFOnews.ca in 2023 he had no plans to stop working in the studio. Maas was 78 at the time.

Several of Maas’ public installations in Kamloops and the Okanagan can be found at these locations:

On the Beach – Kelowna, Waterfront Park

Bronze apple time capsule – Kelowna, Orchard Park Mall

Community In Motion – Kamloops, Riverside Park

Building Communities – Lake Country, outside the municipal hall

Circle of Friendship – Kelowna, Kasugai Gardens

Sprit of Kelowna – Kelowna, inside city hall

Destiny – Vernon, Okanagan College

Aside from his numerous public art installations, the Geert Maas Sculpture Gardens at his home has been open daily, where people could find his work on the family’s sprawling yard at 250 Reynolds Road. On Nov. 11, it will host a public art sale from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., and a celebration of life will take place on Dec. 20.
