Tenerife forward suffers cardiac arrest after on-field collision and ‘stable’ in hospital

MADRID (AP) — Tenerife forward Jesús de Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest and was rushed to the hospital after an on-field collision in a Spanish second-division match on Monday.

De Miguel was challenging for the ball in midfield when he was struck in the chest by Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during the final minutes at Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López.

The 30-year-old de Miguel was taken to the hospital and the match, tied 2-2, was suspended in the 108th minute.

Tenerife reported in a statement that he was “stable, despite the severity of his condition,” in the intensive care unit of the Hospital Universitario de Nuestra Señora de Candelaria in Santa Cruz.

Several first-division clubs and the Spanish Football Federation wished the forward a speedy recovery.

“From the RFEF, we would like to extend all our encouragement, strength, and support to Jesús de Miguel, as well as to the entire CD Tenerife family,” the federation posted on social media.

Since making his debut in 2015 with Leganés B, de Miguel has played for eight other clubs in Spain, including Tenerife, where he arrived last year.
